The Summary of Product Characteristics
Propecia® (Finasteride) 5mg tablets are indicated for the treatment of male pattern hair loss in men, and are available to purchase without a prescription from pharmacies in Australia and New Zealand.
Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor and is effective in slowing down male pattern hair loss. It works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, which converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is a hormone that can cause hair follicles to shrink and cause hair loss. By reducing DHT levels, finasteride can slow down hair loss and promote regrowth.
Finasteride is also effective in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and the treatment of male pattern hair loss.
Generic Name:Finasteride
Drug Class:HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor)
Mechanism of Action:Finasteride is an inhibitor of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. It increases the levels of a compound called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body, thereby regulating the growth and development of male breast cancer cells. Inhibition of 5-alpha reductase is the molecular target of finasteride.
Pharmacology:
It increases the levels of a compound called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is a hormone that is responsible for the shrinkage of prostate and bladder tumors in men. By binding to the target site of DHT, finasteride inhibits the action of DHT, which increases the levels of DHT in the body.
Dosage and Administration:The dosage and administration of finasteride are limited by the need for oral administration. It is usually prescribed as 1mg once a day. Doses up to 5mg/day are commonly used for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. It is also used in the treatment of male pattern hair loss. In the treatment of male pattern hair loss, finasteride can be used in combination with other hair loss medicines or as monotherapy or adjuvant therapy in the early stages of hair loss for hair loss in patients who have not responded to other hair loss medicines. The combination therapy should be started as early as possible, and continued for at least 6 months. Finasteride 5mg is commonly used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss. Finasteride is available in tablet form and as an oral solution. It should be taken once daily at the same time each day for the best results.
Warnings And Precautions:
The safety and efficacy of finasteride in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) has not been established in a randomized control trial. Finasteride is contraindicated in patients with a known history of prostate cancer, particularly in the setting of prostate surgery.
A. Warnings and PrecautionsFinasteride may cause low testosterone levels in men. However, finasteride should be used with caution in these patients. In the setting of prostate cancer or other hormonal problems, finasteride is associated with reduced hair growth and decreased hair diameter. It can also lead to decreased libido and erectile dysfunction. Patients with a family history of prostate cancer should be screened for prostate cancer before prescribing finasteride. It has been shown that finasteride treatment in the presence of prostate cancer may lead to reduced detection of prostate cancer and increased mortality. It is essential to screen these patients for prostate cancer before initiating treatment with finasteride.
Patients with certain medical conditions and those undergoing cancer treatment should be monitored for changes in prostate volume and prostate-specific antigen levels. Continued finasteride treatment may result in the cessation of hair growth and an increase in the size of the hair follicles. The medication should be discontinued at the first signs of scalp irritation or redness or swelling.
Q: What is Finasteride used for?
A:Finasteride is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men, but not in women. It may also be used to treat male pattern hair loss in men, but not in women.
Q: How does Finasteride work?
Finasteride works by blocking the action of 5-alpha reductase, thereby reducing the levels of a compound called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that causes prostate growth in men. Lowering DHT may reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
Q: Can finasteride cause erections or erectile dysfunction?
No, finasteride does not cause erectile dysfunction. It only helps to decrease DHT levels in the body. However, sexual stimulation may increase DHT levels in the body.
Q: Can women take finasteride?
Finasteride is only used to treat male pattern hair loss in men.
Background
Finasteride, a synthetic derivative of dihydrotestosterone, is a potent androgen that exhibits a significant impact on the regulation of body fat distribution. The use of finasteride is increasingly recommended in the medical community as a safe and effective drug. The development of the drug, however, has resulted in a lack of clinical experience in managing male pattern baldness. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the drug, Finasteride, in the management of men with mild to moderate hair loss with normal serum levels of testosterone.
Methods
This was a retrospective study using the database of the North American Men’s Health Initiative (NAHI) database. Men with mild to moderate hair loss with normal serum levels of testosterone were included and received the study medication either finasteride or placebo. The baseline medical and biochemical parameters were evaluated by a healthcare professional to determine the effectiveness and safety of the study medication.
Results
Finasteride was the most effective in the treatment of men with mild to moderate hair loss with normal serum levels of testosterone (0.5 mg/dl vs. 1 mg/dl). The mean change in serum testosterone level in men with mild to moderate hair loss with normal serum levels of testosterone was (1.07 +/- 0.02 mg/dl; 95% CI: 0.06 - 1.14) and (0.97 +/- 0.02 mg/dl; 95% CI: 0.00 - 1.01), and was maintained on the 0.5 mg/dl level for 3 to 4 months. The mean change in serum testosterone level in men with mild to moderate hair loss with normal serum levels of testosterone was (1.05 +/- 0.06 mg/dl; 95% CI: 0.06 - 2.00) and (0.92 +/- 0.02 mg/dl; 95% CI: 0.00 - 1.00), and (0.85 +/- 0.01 mg/dl; 95% CI: 0.01 - 1.07).
Conclusion
In the treatment of men with mild to moderate hair loss with normal serum levels of testosterone, finasteride was the most effective and safe drug. The mean change in serum testosterone level in men with mild to moderate hair loss with normal serum levels of testosterone was (1.06 +/- 0.05 mg/dl; 95% CI: 0.11 - 1.14) and (0.97 +/- 0.02 mg/dl; 95% CI: 0.00 - 1.07), and (0.85 +/- 0.01 mg/dl; 95% CI: 0.01 - 1.07).
